A MOSFET regulator will improve the charging system with more accurate voltage regulation, cooler regulator temperatures during heavy use, and long-term reliability.

This component is often called a regulator, rectifier, or both, which can be confusing since it performs both functions in one unit. What many are unfamiliar with is the different types of voltage regulator/rectifiers. Most manufacturers use what is often called a shunt type regulator, although newer and more expensive models sometimes use a Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) regulator. But technically speaking, both types are shunt regulators, the difference being in the components they use to do the job.

The regulator function of a voltage regulator/rectifier works by shunting, or redirecting current from the stator to ground to be dissipated as heat when it senses the battery voltage is high enough, and therefore fully charged. A more common shunt-type regulator uses a solid-state electrical component called a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) as a switch to send stator current to the battery or to ground. Whereas, a MOSFET-type regulator uses a much more efficient electrical component called a MOSFET transistor to perform the switching, sending current to the battery when needed or to ground when the battery is full.

The main differences are in switching speed and heat generation. The SCR is a very slow to switch, requiring lots of electrical current to complete the switch, resulting in lots of heat and variation in the battery voltage. The MOSFET is extremely quick to switch positions, and requires much less current, resulting in a much cooler unit, and significantly more stable battery voltage. Heat is the primary killer of voltage regulator/rectifiers, so an upgrade that runs cooler and works better makes a lot of sense.

OEM manufacturers use silicon rectifier regulation circuits because they are significantly cheaper to manufacture than MOSFET designs. Silicon rectifier regulation circuits have been in use since the late 1970’s, and are sufficient for most low to moderate output powersports charging systems. In high-output systems like the Polaris RZR, especially where heat is an issue, they are not capable of reliable long-term operation.

Defective and poor-quality wiring harnesses can cause many problems on an off-road vehicle. High resistance and bad connections caused by poor terminal crimping or cheap insulation can cause electrical problems that are difficult and expensive to diagnose. These problems are significantly worse on modern computer-controlled vehicles like the Polaris RZR. Small quantity, hand-built wiring harnesses or extensions may seem like a good idea, but inconsistent terminal crimps, solder joints, and insulation can often occur. Factory-manufactured harnesses are built with strict quality control measures in place to ensure consistently trouble-free parts.

Even the strongest high amperage regulator can’t overcome clogged heat sink fins during hard riding.
